About Antioch
Antioch is a suburb of San Francisco and Oakland located in Contra Costa County along the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta. It is considered the Gateway to the Delta because it's the very point where the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers come together and continue into the ocean.
History
The area was first settled in 1850 and later named in 1851 after the biblical city in Syria. With the San Joaquin being one of the state's only means of transportation to the outside world, the town developed a bustling waterfront and became a major supply depot for the Sierra gold fields. In the following decades a variety of businesses and industries emerged such as paper mills, salmon fishing, and agriculture.
A Growing Community
Today, Antioch is one of the most up and coming communities in the East Bay. While this is primarily a "bedroom" community with many residents commuting out to larger cities, the city has experienced enormous growth over the last 30 years. The City of Antioch has initiated an aggressive economic development program, and the residential base continues to grow with a diverse community of more than 100,000 people.
Parks and Recreation
Antioch offers an abundance of public parks and recreation areas. Southeast of Antioch, you'll find the Black Diamond Coal Mines, a hilly historical preserve, which has over 50 scenic trails to explore and hike through. You'll also find Contra Loma Regional Park, which includes an 80-acre reservoir for year-round fishing and a life guarded swim lagoon for summertime swimming. There, you can also enjoy year-round hiking, biking, and nature study.
In addition to the many outdoor activities you can experience in the hills of Antioch, the Delta is considered the center point for recreation. You can camp by the water in tents or RVs, swim, ski, or fish. If you love golf, Antioch has two challenging 18-hole golf courses. And the kids will love the Prewett Family Waterpark Center and the local skateboard park.
